A
unique itinerary, the crossover to Valtournenche is only for those
who are fit as it requires a little physical energy. Following the
route to Alpe Layet, Carosello Alto, from here we continue upwards
to the “Gare” until joining the ascent to the Canyon, a rocky
bottomland. Here we turn and continue along the mountain ridge, the
landscape opens up as we ascend towards the Castello di rocce,
another couple of bends and we come to the valley of Champlong, a
few alpine huts for shepherds. A few more ups and downs, and from
here you can see the floor of the valley and behind you the
Matterhorn. We are now faced with the bottomland of the Mande, the
route goes up and down the hills and across the snowfields, we can
see the tops of Motta and Roisette, and the foot of the valley, the
whole world below us! It’s like being in the clouds. We reach the
lifts of Valtournenche and follow the route to a refuge, where we
stop for a glimpse of Valle d’Aosta and a glass of mulled wine.
Refreshed, we head on up for the way back. On the return trip, we
use the same piste until the exit from the Canyon and start the
descent by going through the Mande wood, following on to Rocca
Promindo, Tre laghi and Pian del tasso, where we stop for a test of
your driving abilities, on an appropriate track, or for those who
haven’t driven along the route to have a try. An ideal place to take
photos or make films. Passing through Chateau wood you might see
squirrels on the way back. Descent via Vorpilles valley, along the
shores of Blu Lake, Baby hill and return.
